SO, WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH HILL STREET WHOLEFOODS?
At Hill Street Wholefoods we’ve turned our favourite sweet treats into easy to make, mouthwatering wholefood masterpieces.
We’ve ignored over-processed ingredients and popped nutritious, plant-based ones in their place. We’ve ditched the dairy, got rid of gluten and catered for vegans - we’ve even whisked away the refined sugar hangover.
We’ve made it so simple, all you have to do is add a couple of wet ingredients and everyone you serve will think you’ve got Nigella locked in the kitchen.
WHAT MAKES WHOLEFOOD BAKING SO GREAT?
Wholefood baking is all about using real, unprocessed ingredients. When you eat wholefoods, you're getting the food in its natural state, they are intact, with all of the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that are naturally in the food. Basically, it's the healthy whole food, rather than the bits that remain after refinement and processing.
One of the benefits of a whole food or a minimally processed diet include lower rates of heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes (2014 analysis by Yale University). You can also rest easy knowing that you won't find any additives or preservatives in our mixes.
I'M A TOTAL NEWBIE WHEN IT COMES TO BAKING, WILL I BE ABLE TO MAKE THESE?
Absolutely! We’ve made it so simple, all you have to do is follow the instructions on the back of the pack, add a couple of wet ingredients and wait for the compliments and new friends to roll in.
ARE HILL STREET WHOLEFOODS MIXES GLUTEN FREE?
Yes, all Hill Street Wholefoods baking mixes are gluten free and suitable for Celiacs (we wouldn't want you to miss out!). We periodically test for gluten in our products to be sure we continuously deliver a product that is safe for those that can't consume gluten.
ARE HILL STREET WHOLEFOODS MIXES VEGAN?
Yes, all Hill Street Wholefoods baking mixes are vegan. We don't use animal products in our mixes, only the best plant-based ingredients for our favourite bakers. We leave the decision about what you add to our mixes up to you. Our suggested ingredients aren't all vegan but are easily substituted for vegan friendly ingredients. Here are a couple of suggested substitutes to get you started.
- Milk - substitute for almond, soy or coconut mylk.
- Yoghurt - substitute for coconut yoghurt (we love Raglan Coconut Yoghurt and Cathedral Cove Coconut Yoghurt)
- Eggs - To replace one egg, whisk together 1 tablespoon of ground chia or flaxseed with 3 tablespoons of hot water and leave for 10-15 mins until fully absorbed and thickened. We also love using aquafaba (the liquid in a can of chickpeas) as an egg substitute. To replace one egg use 3 Tbsp of whisked aquafaba (it should be foamy, not whipped). This works especially well in our Cookie mix.
DO HILL STREET WHOLEFOODS MIXES HAVE NUTS IN THEM?
All our mixes contain almonds and were produced in a facility that handles tree nuts.
There are no peanuts in our mixes and no peanuts are handled in our production facility so if you have a peanut allergy you can rest easy and enjoy wholefood baking at its best.
ARE HILL STREET WHOLEFOODS MIXES DAIRY FREE?
Yes, all Hill Street Wholefoods baking mixes are dairy free. We like to cater to as many preferences and allergies as possible so everyone can enjoy our mixes. When adding milk or yoghurt to our mixes opt for non-dairy alternatives such as almond milk and coconut yoghurt.
ARE HILL STREET WHOLEFOODS MIXES REFINED SUGAR FREE?
Yes. We don't use refined sugar (cane sugar or brown sugar) in any of our mixes. Instead we opt to sweeten our mixes with wholefood ingredients and coconut sugar.
Our organic coconut sugar is minimally processed which means it retains a large quantity of nutrients compared to more processed sugars. Coconut sugar contains vitamins, electrolytes, minerals and also has a much lower GI score (around 35) than standard sugar.
ARE HILL STREET WHOLEFOODS MIXES LOW FODMAP?
Our Banana Bread and Pancake mixes are both low FODMAP.
The Cacao Fudge Brownie and Choc Chip Cookie are low - moderate FODMAP. They contain 10.5g and 7.8g of coconut sugar per serve respectively which sits between low and moderate on the Monash University FODMAP scale.
This answer is based on Monash University, Australia standards.
